The hopper and compactor

The centerpiece of the Transfer Station is the hopper and compactor. This is where most waste is deposited, including all waste that is not accepted for recycling, is not a hazardous or universal waste, and does not have a designated deposit site at the facility. Here are some do’s and don’ts for using the hopper and compactor:\

  • Always use transparent or pale-white plastic garbage bags when tossing household wastes into the hopper. This requirement is for safety reasons and is strictly enforced by facility attendants.
  • Do not throw anything into the hopper larger than 3 feet-by-3 feet.
  • Items that should not be thrown into the hopper include liquid paint, motor oil, cardboard, pesticides and other chemicals, grass clippings and leaves, ashes (hot or cold), propane containers, building materials, furniture, roofing shingles or concrete products. All of these waste items should be deposited in designated areas at the facility.
  • Ask an attendant for help if you’re not sure where an item should go.

Items dropped into the hopper are delivered to the Norridgewock landfill managed by Waste Management, Inc.
