Special town approves extending moratorium

Vote delays commercial solar, wind, cell tower, subdivision applications

Belgrade voters overwhelmingly approved extending the Town's moratorium ordinance regarding applications for new subdivisions, commercial solar arrays and wind turbines, and telecommunications towers during a special town meeting Nov. 16.

The moratorium will continue through May 5, 2022. That will allow the Planning Board to finish its work on a rewrite of the Town's subdivision ordinance, which was drafted in 1988 and no longer complies with state law. That ordinance will be presented to voters at the annual town meeting in March. Additionally, the Planning Board will be working on regulations for commercial solar and wind farms, and cell towers to be added to the Town's commercial development review ordinance. Those regulations will include a process for decommissioning infrastructure once it has outlived its viability, and issues related to the siting and design of solar developments.
